this discussion invites you to consider the validity of this interpretation of political globalization, by reflecting on the current COVID-19 health pandemic and considering what the global response to this crisis tells us about the relative power of individual states, and the role of IGOs like the World Health Organization (WHO). To what extent are we currently living in an era of global governance? To what extent do individual states retain sovereignty? Are all states equally independent? Would a 'real' world government be preferable in the face of this kind of global pandemic? Why or why not? Compare and contrast two countries, the best and worst, to find out how are some states responding to the COVID -19 crisis? At an individual level, what are you doing to flatten the curve?
Globalisation is the phenomenon
where the world is considered to be borderless or the entire world
is considered to be a single village, a global village. This could
be understood in the manner in which capital flows from one state
to another, the flow of goods, information and people. In true
sense, the plethora of technical developments that man has made,
has helped in truly making the idea of the world is one
reality.
another aspect of the Same reality that we see today, in this
pandemic, that has spread like wildfire and does not seem to burn
out. In order to manage the situation, it is now seen that the
world has truly come together to implement ideas.
we see successful models of different countries being tried in
countries that are worse off hit by the pandemic. We see movement
of drugs, from one country to the other to curb the number of
deaths. We see how there is a race to build the vaccine against
COVID 19, and a race that is being carried out in major countries
of the world. The idea here is to create something that can
safeguard people as whole. It is not aimed at a particular country
or community.
we see successful models coming up, but, in the same line of
management, we have also seen that the countries have handcrafted
these models to the needs of their states. There have been general
rules or guidelines provided by the WHO . But the implementation of
these guidelines in their countries is solely on the state. This
COVID 19 has given us examples such as that of India, where the
largest complete lockdown in the history was seen, where 1.3
billion people and their lives were put at a standstill for initial
management of the pandemic.
such examples highlight how every
country has been not only able to maintain its sovereignty but has
also complied with the guidelines. Though there is presence of
international organisations such as WHO but we do know that their
guidelines are not binding in a verbatim manner. We also know that
it is completely on one particular state to implement what they fit
best for their state.
at an individual level, i have minimised my outings. I have also made sure that every trip I make outside my house would be keeping all safety precautions in mind. Masks and face shield is a part of attire now. Also, gloves have become routine. There have been proper distances maintained with people. Also, hand sanitizers are a part of the travel kit. Every surface touched is first sanitised.
