Toddlers are pre-schoolers. They have just started interacting with the world around, and are still discovering many things.

At this age, the primary form of learning for them should be through people and interaction. If technology is used in order to to make them learn about a certain thing, it should be supervised by an elder and it should be time-limited. Parents should remember that at this stage major learning takes place through interactions with people.

It is important to monitor children using technology because of a number of reasons.

• Children might get exposed to unwanted information which could be age-inappropriate.
• It has been found that children who use phones or laptops at bedtime double the risk of poor sleep.
• Excessive use of technology at such a tender age would lead to many physical problems in the long run such as poor eye-sight, bad posture problems, obesity due to lack of physical activity etc.
• Another point to be noted is that, children may form an assumption that the internet comes without any cost. They are too young to understand the value of money, and hence should not be encouraged to overuse.

Even though there are many apps which have been introduced for children of various age groups, the average screen time should not exceed more than one-two hours a day, in case of toddlers. They should be instead allowed to play constructive games, colours, clays, toys, etc. Also, parents should take out adequate time to talk to their kids and make them learn new things instead of letting them get glued to the screens.

When I was a child, there was not much technological advancement. I therefore grew up watching TV, playing music, playing outdoors and indoors as well. My parents used to play with me too. They used to read story books to me, and I used to try to tell them in the same way as they told me. I used to sing rhymes and dance along. Everything was real, nothing was virtual.
