Decide whether each pair of elements in the table below will form an ionic compound. If they will write the empirical formula and name of the compound formed in the spaces provided.
Element 1 | Element 2 | forms ionic compound | Empirical formula | name of ionic compound |
Oxygen (non metal) | Calcium(metal) | yes | CaO | Calcium oxide |
Rubidium (metal) | iodine(nonmetal) | yes | RbI2 | Rubidium iodide |
Calcium (metal) | bromine(nonmetal) | yes | CaBr2 | Calcium bromide |
Oxygen (nonmetal) | cesium (metal) | yes | Cs2O | Cesium oxide |
Ionic compound are formed between a metal and non metal.
Rules for writting a formula ,
Charge of cation ( metal) is writren
Charge of anion ( nonmetal) is written .
Then balancing the charge .
For example.
Charge of Ca = +2
Charge of O = -2.
Then equal the total positive charge and negative charge.
Hence, formula is CaO.
In writiing name , cation is name first then the anion.
For the anion part ide is written after root name.
For example name of ionic compound CaO is
Calcium oxide.
