Solutions

Expert Solution

Element 1 Element 2 forms ionic compound Empirical formula name of ionic compound
Oxygen (non metal) Calcium(metal) yes CaO Calcium oxide
Rubidium (metal) iodine(nonmetal) yes RbI2 Rubidium iodide
Calcium (metal) bromine(nonmetal) yes CaBr2 Calcium bromide
Oxygen (nonmetal) cesium (metal) yes Cs2O Cesium oxide

Ionic compound are formed between a metal and non metal.

Rules for writting a formula ,

Charge of cation ( metal) is writren

Charge of anion ( nonmetal) is written .

Then balancing the charge .

For example.

Charge of Ca = +2

Charge of O = -2.

Then equal the total positive charge and negative charge.

Hence, formula is CaO.

In writiing name , cation is name first then the anion.

For the anion part ide is written after root name.

For example name of ionic compound CaO is

Calcium oxide.
