10) Pick one of the following elements: Na, O, Fe, Cl. Based on what we have learned so far (Chapters 1-6), type and attach an one to two paragraph paper on this element. Include information such as classification, reactivity, solubility of its compounds, etc.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a)

Na --> sodium, alkali metal, will typically for +1 ions, it is a metal,

it is very reactive, will not be found in nature as Na(s), forms basic solution in water

Na(s) + H2O(l) = NaOH + OH-

Na compounds are very soluble, since Na+ ionizes readily,

examples --> Na3PO4 = 3Na+ + PO4-3

b)

O

oxygen, it is part of the oxygen family, it is a very oxidant material, will form plenty of compounds via covalent bonding ( Caborn, Sulfur, halides, etc.)

It also forms strong lattices with metals, examples Na2O, CaO, etc...

it is very reactive, but will form O=O (O2 gas) readily which is considerably stable,

O2 is a nonpolar gas, so it will not be that soluble in water

c)

Fe --> iron, trnasition metal, will form rust when exposed to Oxygen

it is not that reactive, but will corrode with time, it is slightly soluble as a metal, requires strong acids to form Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions

d)

Cl --> halide family, chlorine is a gas at room T, will form Cl2(g) Cl-Cl interactions, rather than CL alone.

It is very reactive and it oxidizes readily.

Cl2(g) is very soluble, and forms H2O + Cl = HCl(aq) solution
