Answer- Many social transitions have taken place in the last 40 years. One of them is the trasition to adulthood which has become longer and happen later in life than previous such as the entry to stable work, marriage and parenthood. According to Jeffery Arnett, this emerging adulthood starts from age 18 years and 29 years. According to him, the two main social changes that contributed to the rise of emerging adulthood-

  • Identity Exploration- Today people are focusing on their career and trying out various possibilities of what kind of person to be and what kind of life to live, mainly in the areas of love relationships, jobs and education.
  • Self Focus- Emerging adulthood pays attention on a self focused life. It refers to the time when people have the fewest daily roles and duties towards others. Adults typically have a marriage partner and a long term employer. The role of parental authority is less than earlier ages.
