Identify any one busy street on your community with large volumes of surface traffic comprised of vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Then answer the following questions

  1. Explain how you would carry out problem identification, and if a problem is found to exist, discuss how you would assess the need for a solution.

  1. From the assessment you made above (in a), assume that you have established the need for a solution and that you have decided to produce a conceptual design to solve the problem. List and discuss any five conceptual design alternatives.

  1. from (b) above, how would you

i). establish the goals and objectives;

ii). the criteria to assess the desirability, efficiency, or effectiveness of each design alternative; and

iii)choose the best of the conceptual design alternatives.

Solutions

Expert Solution

A. Problem Identification and assesment of need of solution:- The street is having vehicles, cyclist and pedestrians. To identify the problem the site survey with videography will be done. Through this videography number of conflict points at which these vehicles pedestrians and cyclists will be conflicting, will be observed. In case these points of conflict are more then as specified in the codes for design, then there will be need of solution.

B. Alternative conceptual design solutions:-

1. Providing pedestrians paths

2. Providing traffic signals with Zebra crossing.

3. Providing cycle lane

4. Providing overfoot bridge

5. Providing underpass.

C. Establishment of goals and objectives:- Goal and objective will be to provide hinderance free, conflict free amd safe movement of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, which will be fulfilled by application of one or more alternatives as above.

Effectiveness and efficiency of design alternative:- 1. Site survey will be done in which a questionnaire will be given to all the persons in traffic i.e.drivers, cyclists and pedestrians in which question will be given that will contain all the alternatives solutions. People have to give ratings to each alternatives.

2. Effectiveness of each alternative can also be assessed from past experience and studies.

Choose best alternative:- The alternative having best rating and best performance as per past studies will be choosen as best design alternative and will be applied as a solution.
