Is engaging in an eating disorder a "real life-style" choice? Why or why not?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Engaging in a eating disorder is not really an active lifestyle choice. This is a misconception among people who do not understand the manner in which these illnesses work. Even though people would mean good for the person who is suffering from the illness, an inappropriate understanding of the illness does not help.

This is largely because instead of being an 'active' choice, eating disorders are psychiatic problems that the individuals do not get to choose. DSM-5 has also recognized five different types of eating disorders as psychological problems. There are a number of genetic and biological factors also that come into play when we are talking about eating disorders. There might also be a problem of co-morbidity which is essentially the occurance of one of more disorders simultaneously.
