What are the advantages and disadvantages of the flexible pavements?
Flexibule pavement means pavement whose surface course is constructed with aggregates and bitumen binders
Advantages
1)wear and tear is less
2)smooth ride is provided, because flexible pavement does not have joints so that they provide a smooth surface to ride
3)gradual failure of the pavement will occur.
4) Quick repair is done because of less curing time
5) Initial cost is low
6)variation of stress regarding to temperature is low
Disadvantages
1) less durability and it's life span is 15 years
2) Due to high temperatures bitumen will become soft which leads to uncomfortable riding
3) Bitumen contain small amount of hydrocarbons which will pollute the soil
4)poor visibility during night time
5)low tensile strength when compared to rigid pavement
6)pores of the surface get clogged during rain which leads to drainage problems
7) Maintainance cost is high. Because flexible pavement are less durable it's maintainance cost is high
