What are the advantages and disadvantages of VNTRs?
Hi Answer:
Q. What are the advantages and disadvantages of VNTRs?
Answer: VNTRs: These are the tandem repeat regions on the genome that show variation in the number of repeat units among chromosomes in a population. These are the polymorphic minisatellites and also known as the variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs).
Advantages:
(i) VNTRs are present in almost all higher eukaryotes. This VNTRs act as a tool for genotyping and tells the information based on the number of repetitive sequences.
(ii) The VNTRs method is used to develop a molecular typing method to facilitate meaningful comparative DNA fingerprinting of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis isolates from the human and animal reservoirs. Which help to understand the genetic bases of the Crohn’s disease of humans.
(iii) Also used in the molecular genotyping of Haemophilus influenza type b
(iv) VNTR technique is more reliable than the other genotyping techniques such as RFLP etc.
(v) VNTR analysis is also being used to study genetic diversity and breeding patterns in populations of wild or domesticated animals.
Disadvantages
(i) Is a modern technique and required a well-equipped lab and skilled workers.
(ii) The VNTR identification and matching technique is costly and need more resources.
(iii) The probabilities in VNTR is varying and are visible across racial lines. Or in another word some VNTR are occurring very frequently in one race peoples and are rare in another race of persons.
