Explain how three processes unique meiosis generate a great deal of genetic variation.
Three unique processes that occur during meiosis and which are responsible for generation of genetic variations are;
1. Crossing over; In this process non sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes exchange their parts. It creates new combination of genes which in turn can generate variations.
2. Independent assortment: In metaphase each homolgous pair of chromosome assorts or aligns independently of the other pair of homologous chromosome. Therefore maternal and paternal chromosomes are assorted indepndently into gametes. Thus a gamete randomly receives paternal and maternal chromosomes.
3. Random fertilization of male and female gamete which creates additional variations.
All these unique processes bring up variations .
