Could new mutations or diseases arise through IVP, CRISPR, or PGD?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Summary- IVP- is invitro production means development or fertilization out side the body which can be consider as IVM(invitromaturation) and IVF ( invitro fetilization) .

CRISPR is a genome editing tool where Cas9 protein loaded with guide RNA sequence which complements with the target sequence than cas9 nuclease cleaves the DNA sequences, in this process targeted genome editing can be done

PGD- pre implantation genetic diagnosis- is a test where on or two cells car taken out if the embryo to check for genetic disorders

so as we can see IVP & PGD are just processes which nothing to do with mutation or causing diseases

but if CRISPR CAS9 method appiled to for genome editing of the embryo It may introduce mutation which ultimately rise to any diseases. tho crispr is target specific but there are also off targeting also seen in experimental events, so off target would introduce single or multiple mutation that might express as diseases phenotype

If CRISPR can cure rare genetic diseases, why shouldn't scientists get to the point where this can be done safely and accurately. Basic needs here would be to define: "What is SAFE when it comes to genetic engineering of humans?" What do we need to see that it is safe.

Pick one class of CFTR mutations and brainstorm 2 examples of specific mutations that could fall in the class you have chosen. Many versions of correct answers are possible for each class mutations. Use your understanding of how the cell works and propose 2 mutations. Explain how they will work. For example, class I mutations is associated with no CFTR protein being made. Think how could that happen.

Suppose everyone had access to free CRISPR/CAS9 based gene editing to correct mutations at embryonic level. Now answer briefly the following questions 1) Is it true or false that you might not need an artificial repair template to correct the mutation? Explain the reason for your answer (no more than 1 brief sentence). 2) What could still be an ethical concern with gene editing on embryo? Limit your answer to 1 concern.
