How can management effectively evaluate individuals when they work as part of a team? What kind of measures should be used? Who would do the ratings of performance?
Performance appraisal is one of the most important elements of the HR practice in any company. Normally, the immediate supervisor to whom an employee reports would evaluate the employee in terms of their performance, behaviors and skills. However, this appraisal is not just for the sake of increment or promotion alone as it is also to intimate the employees about the areas in which they need to improve. In my opinion, it should not only be the responsibility of the immediate supervisor but also should be their colleagues and anyone who has direct contact with them such as, the customers or suppliers. Questionnaires, interviews, open feedback in a meeting would all help he managers gain better understanding about the employees. Thus, a 360 degree feedback about an employee would not only help the managers make a better assessment about the employees but also would be able to provide them a better progress report.
