Write the dissociation reaction for the following acids in water H2O. State whether the acid is a strong acid or a weak acid. Is the reaction reversible? Identify the acid, base, conjugate acid, and conjugate base.
State the Dissociation reaction, Strong or Weak Acid, Is it reversable, Acid, Base, Conjugate Acid, Conjugate Base for each. PLEASE SHOW WORK, AND EXPLAIN.
1. H2CO3
2.HCI
3. HNO3
4. Write the equation that represents the reaction of hydrochloric acid in water.
Conjugate acid-base pair that includes hydrochloric acid:
Conjugate acid-base pair that does not include hydrochloric acid:
Does water act as an acid or a base in this reaction?
Answer –
1) We are given acid H2CO3 and when we put it in the water there is dissociation of H2CO3. We know dissociation means splitting the molecules into ions.
H2CO3 Ka value is 4.3 *10-7 which too small means there is very less dissociation is and we know when incomplete dissociation then there is weak acid or base. So H2CO3 is weak acid and there is reversible reaction.
H2CO3(aq) + H2O(l) <------> H3O+ (aq) + HCO3-(aq)
Acid Base Conjugate acid Conjugate base
2) We are given acid HCl and when we put it in the water there is dissociation of HCl. The Ka value of HCl greater than 1 means there is complete dissociation is and we know when complete dissociation then there is strong acid or base. So HCl is strong acid and there is irreversible reaction.
HCl(aq) + H2O(l) ------> H3O+ (aq) + Cl-(aq)
Acid Base Conjugate acid Conjugate base
3) We are given acid HNO3 and when we put it in the water there is dissociation of HNO3. The Ka value of HNO3 greater than 1 means there is complete dissociation is and we know when complete dissociation then there is strong acid or base. So HNO3 is strong acid and there is irreversible reaction.
HNO3 (aq) + H2O(l) ------> H3O+ (aq) + NO3- (aq)
Acid Base Conjugate acid Conjugate base
4) Conjugate acid base pair of hydrochloric acid including the hydrochloric acid
HCl(aq) + H2O(l) ------> H3O+ (aq) + Cl-(aq)
Acid Base Conjugate acid Conjugate base
Conjugate acid base pair of hydrochloric acid without including the hydrochloric acid
H2O(l) + H+ (aq) ------> H3O+(aq)
