which solvent is the best for the analysis of a mixture of ferrocene and acetylferrocene? explain your reasoning

Solutions

Expert Solution

FOR THIS FIRST WE HAVE TO KNOW HOW THE  CHROMATOGRAPHY WORKS AND ON WHAT BASES IT SEPARATE THE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF A MIXTURE.

A CHROMATOGRAPHY SEPARATES DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF A MIXTURE BASED ON THEIR POLARITY. BASED ON THAT APPROPRIATE SOLVENT IS USED. FIRST THE POLARITY AND RF VALUE IS CHECKED BY TLC BY WHICH WE CAN COME TO A CONCLUSION FOR AN APPROPRIATE SOLVENT.

HERE, THE IN MIXTURE OF FERROCENE AND ACETYLFERROCENE COMPONENTS ARE PRESENT IN WHICH FERROCENE IS NON POLAR AND ACETYLFERROCENE IS POLAR.

AND WHILE SEPARATING THE COMPONENTS WE SHOULD KEEP IN MIND THAT FIRST WE SHOULD SEPARATE THE LESS POLAR COMPONENT THAN MORE POLAR. FOR THAT WE SHOULD USE NON POLAR SOLVENT FIRST. IT WE USE POLAR SOLVENT FIRST BOTH THE COMPONENTS OF THE MIXTURE COMES DOWN THE COLLUM BY WHICH WE CANT SEPARATE THE MIXTURE. TEREFORE FIRST WE HAVE TO UES THE NON POLAR SOLVENTS.

HERE TO SEPARATE THE TWO COMPONENTS FIRST WE SHOULD USE THE NON POLAR HEXANE SOLVENT BY WHICH THE NON POLAR FERROCENE COMES DOWN THE COLLUM AND SEPARATES OUT. THEN FOR POLAR ACETYLFERROCENE WE HAVE TO INCREASE THE POLARITY OF THE SOLVENT. FOR THAT WE CAN USE 10% ETHY ACETATE IN HEXANE , WE CAN INCREASE THE POLARITY BY INCREASING THE PERCENTAGE OF ETHY ACETATE IN HEXANE. BY WHICH THE MORE POLAR ACETYLFERROCENE SEPARATES OUT.
