Principal Plane-

Assume a 2D plane two stresses and a shear stress is acting as shown in the exmaple below, this stress system is drawn as shown in the figure below but this is an ordinary frame not having maximum stress and also includes shear stress.

Principal Plane is the plane which shows the maximum stress occuring ion the system and does not include shear stress acting on the system thus shear stress is zero and the normal stress on this plane is known as principal stress.

Principal Plane can be found out both using analytical and graphical method.In graphical method we use Mohr circle..

IMPORTANCE OF PLANE ORIENTATION DETERMINATION The plane orientation determines that on a plane at which maximum stress acts , in this orientaion is the system fails .

Thus this is plane is the weakes tplane when a system of stress acts thus the failure acts along this plane.
