High risk behavior adolescents can be defined as those who are intentional in seeking or participating in activities that aren't desirable and are potentially harmful for the person in the short or long term. High risk behaviors can range from gang associations, theft, substance abuse, and also premature sexual activities. This can endanger the physical as well as the mental health of the person in question.
In order to understand high risk behaviors social scientists have sought to understand the causes behind the implementation of these behaviors. The determinants include, but are not limited to, family characteristics and socio cultural factors.
With family characteristics , those families that are dysfunctional can have an impact on adolescents, for instance those belonging to divorce backgrounds. Also the families finances and financial conditions have a considerable effect on the child's behavior and perception.
In terms of socio cultural factors it is believed that within certain ethnicities, owing to the institutionalised boundaries with in a society with respect to them, have their adolescents engage in high risk behavior as a consequence. In terms of the social context, one's peer group has a massive influence on the way that a person behaves and the nature of activities they indulge in owing to pressure.
