A novel multicellular organism has been discovered whose natural habitat is a barren desert with limited water and nutrients. The organism is capable of reproducing either sexually or asexually. Which of the following do you think will be most advantageous for the organism with respect to survival and evolution?
Sexual reproduction
Asexual reproduction
Sexual reproduction along with alternation of generation
Asexual reproduction along with mechanisms of acquiring DNA from other organisms
The answer is:
sexual reproduction.
The sexual reproduction leads to variation in the gametes which are produced by the meiosis. The crossing over is the main event which leads to genetic variation in the gametes. The fusion of gametes of ywo different parents also produces variation. That's why there is found high chances of variation which can provide the benefical trait to the organism due to which organism can conserve the water. This provides the advantageous trait to the offspring.
