18. explain the process of biomass conversion.

18. explain the process of biomass conversion.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Biomass is a renewable energy source made from organic matter.

2. examples are dead organic matter, dead trees in forest, wood etc,.

3.It can be used as a fuel to generate energy by conversion. for example it can generate electrical energy.

some of the common conversion methods are

1.Combustion process in which biomass is converted into high pressure steam using boilers and steam is passed through turbines to produce mechanical energy and it is connected to an alternator to produce electrical energy

2. Chemical process in which some chemicals are used to convert biomass to liquid fuels.

3. some bacteria and micro organisms are used to convert biomass into other energies. this is bio chemical process and fermentation is one example for this type of conversion.

4.fermentation is one process in which bacteria and yeasts are used to convert biomass by biochemical process into liquid fuels like alcohol, acids, ethanol.

5. Gasification process in which biomass is converted into biogas and that gas is burnt to convert energy into electrical, mechanical etc., gasification is done at high pressure and high temperatures.

An important step in the blood coagulation process is the enzymatic conversion of the protein prothrombin to the lower-molecular-weight clotting agent, thrombin, via cleavage of a portion of the prothrombin polypeptide. Prothrombin → thrombin + cleaved peptide The values of s20,w and D20,w for prothrombin have been found to be 4.85S and 4.93×10−11m2s−1 , respectively. The diffusion coefficient for thrombin is 8.76×10−11m2s−1. Assuming that both thrombin and prothrombin are unhydrated spheres with vB=0.70mLg−1, calculate the molecular weight of the cleaved...
