There are four types of Knowledge Conversions in the Nonaka and
Takeuchi model of knowledge conversion
- socialization (tacit to tacit)
- externalization (tacit to explicit)
- combination (explicit to explicit)
- internalization (explicit to tacit)
Socialization (tacit to tacit)
- It is the process that transfers tacit knowledge in one person
to tacit knowledge in another person.
- The knowledge is shared through practice, guidance, imitation,
and observation in formal and informal communities.
- It is experiential and active which involves capturing
knowledge by walking around and through direct interactions with
customers, suppliers outside the organization, and people in the
organization. It is mainly, a process between individuals.
- It's difficult to organize tacit knowledge and often it is time
and space specific. Therefore, it can be acquired through a shared
experience like living together or spending time together.
- It is usually found in a traditional apprenticeship where craft
and skill are learned through hands-on experience rather than from
textbooks or manuals.
