  1. A new overpass is being designed and will be crossing an existing roadway 200 feet prior to it’s PVI (station 120+00).   The existing roadway has grades of -4% and +5% and a sag vertical curve length of 1000 feet.   The PVC elevation is at 600 feet.   There are a significant number of trucks that use the existing roadway.   Determine the minimum elevation that then new overpass can be at as measured from the bottom of the overpass based on sight distance for trucks.   (FYI, also think about the height of trucks as well.)

A culvert for a new roadway fill is to be designed for a 25 year flood. Hydrologic analysis results in a peak discharge of 5.66 m3 /s for this flood. The inlet invert elevation is 30.48m, natural stream bed slope is 0.01,tailwater depth above the outlet invert level is 1.1m, culvert length is 60.96 m and the roadway shoulder elevation is 33.5m. A new refrigerator is being designed. Magnets will be used to hold the door closed, and the rubber seal thickness can be selected to adjust the separation between the magnets (and therefore the force). The total length of rubber seal required to go around the door is 6m, and the cost of rubber seal is given equation 2. The pull force when opening the door should be 12N. Determine which of the magnet combinations should be used, and the combined...

The majority of new railways are being built for use with electric traction, with many existing railways also being electrified. Summarise: (i) The benefits of an electrified railway when compared with conventional (diesel) motive power (ii) The advantages and disadvantages of the two different types of electrification system (iii) The practical applications of each type of system. Give reasons for your answer. (b) Describe some common ways of stabilising failed soil slopes. Explain your answer using sketch drawings where appropriate....

Horizontal Curve Problem- A field measurement of an existing two-lane curved roadway (horizontal curve) indicates that the chord length (C) for the inside radius of the road (roadway edge line) is 312.5 ft and the distance from the middle of the chord to the roadway edge line 25 feet. The road has 28 feet of travel way, 14 feet for each lane. Respond to the next three questions about this horizontal curve. 1. Radius for the horizontal curve to the...

A new processing facility is being designed by an engineering project team. Your boss has asked you to design a catalytic system that requires pumping a hydrocarbon slurry that is corrosive and contains abrasive particles. You have narrowed your selection of pumps to two different models. Each pump will satisfy the needs of the project and they both have the same output capacity. The accompanying table lists the costs and other financial data for the two pumps. Complete an Annual...
