Branches of Genetics:

For the sake of convenience of study, the modern geneticists have divided the science of genetics into following branches:

1. Microbial genetics- It deals with the genetics of microorganisms (viz., viruses, bacteria, unicellular plants and animals).

2. Mycogenetics -The genetics of fungi (Burnett, 1975).

3. Plant genetics -The genetics of plants.

4. Animal genetics -The genetics of animals.

5. Human genetics -The genetics of man.

6. Population genetics -The genetics of the different populations of animal and plant species.

7. Cytogenetics -It provides the cytological explanations of genetical principles.

8. Biochemical genetics -It provides the biochemical explanations of various genetical phenomena.

9. Molecular genetics -It is a most modern branch of genetics and it interprets most genetical phenomena in the term of chemical molecules.

10. clinical genetics -It applies genetical analysis in diagnosing various hereditary diseases in man and suggests the possible cures for them.

11. Developmental genetics -It applies genetical knowledge to the developmental biology.

12. Radiation genetics -It deals with the genetical effects of radiations on the living organisms.

13. Quantitative or biometric genetics - It deals with the inheritance of quantitative traits such as body weight, mature plant height, egg or milk production records, yield of grain per acre, etc.
14. Ecological genetics -It deals with the genetics of ecological phenomena.
