ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene)- When the decision is to be made to select a low cost engineering material, ABS material should be given a preference. Besides being low cost, it can be easily machined, fabricated and thermoformed. The other characteristics of consideration is its excellent chemical, stress and creep resistance. This material is marked safe for use in food processing industries. It also maintains a good balance of impact, heat, chemical and abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, tensile strength, surface hardness, rigidity and electrical characteristics. It has the property of remaining hard, rigid, and tough specially at low temperatures. It is also used as a fire-retardant, heat-resistant and platable grades. If ABS material is exposed to sunlight for larger durations, its colour changes and also surface gloss, hardness, impacy strength etc. changes.
