What is sludge volume index used for? Describe the term “bulky sludge” and identify the reason behind its formation.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Sludge volume index is used to moniter the settling characteristics of activated sludge process and many biological suspensions. It is the volume of solids occupied by 1 gram of solids after 30 minutes of settling.

Waste activated sludge is a dark brown flocculent suspensions of active microbial masses inoffensive when fresh. But it may turn septic rapidly due to the presence of biological microorganisms. This leads to the settlings of mixed liquor solids with high water called as bulky sludge.

Bulky sludge occurs when the sludge fails to separate out in sedimentation tanks. There are manhmreasons for the formation of bulky sludge. One of them is growth of filamentous organisms. These organisms grow in long strands that occupy large volume and surface than conventional floc and are very slow in settling. Under certain growing conditions, these filamentous organisms predominate and leads to the formation of bulky sludge. Excess presence of hydrocarbates in feel to the activated sludge process and maintanance of low recycle rate may also lead to the formation of bulky sludge.

An activated sludge process with an aeration basin volume of 0.3 MG is treating wastewater with the average daily flow of 2 MGD. The raw sewage entering the treatment plant has an average BOD5 of 400 mg/L. The primary treatment removes 25% of BOD5 and the subsequent activated sludge process is designed to remove 90% of BOD5. Given: Plant effluent BOD5 concentration = 30 mg/L Biomass concentration in the aeration tank = 2,000 mg/L Biomass concentration in the plant effluent...
