Discuss how we can make Karachi be a smart city.

A smart city is a designation given to a city that incorporates information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance the quality and performance of urban services such as energy, transportation, and utilities to reduce resource consumption, wastage, and overall costs. The overarching aim of a smart city is to enhance the quality of living for its citizens through smart technology

Solutions

Expert Solution

#1: Energy Efficiency:

Energy conservation and efficiency are major focuses of smart cities. We can use smart sensors; smart streetlights dim when there are no cars or pedestrians on the roadways. Smart grid technology can be used to improve operation, maintenance, planning and to supply power on demand, and monitor energy outages. Smart energy solutions have already become relatively common in a household with meters available that allow you to optimize your energy usage. This means you can cut down the amount you spend, but also helps the environment as less power is required.

#2: Sensor and Measurement:

A) Collection: Smart sensors throughout the city gather data in real-time. B) Analysis: Data collected by the smart sensor is accessed to draw meaningful insights. C) Communication: The information that has been found in the analysis phase is communicated with decision-makers through a strong communication network. D) Action: Cities use the information pulled from the data to create a solution, optimize operations and asset management, and improve the quality of life for residents.

#3: Security and Privacy:

We must integrate security into smart city platforms from the start, not as an afterthought. Access protocols and communications require an advanced security architecture that keeps out malicious agents. Security is more about protecting systems and places, it is also about protecting the privacy of citizens.

#4: Connectivity:

It is tough for a city to be smart without reductant, high-speed, low-latency wireless communications. A device (camera, sensor, mobile phone, etc.) must be enabled by some level of Internet connection. Without connectivity, devices cannot exchange information. That is why 5G has so much attention and is so exciting.

5: Digital Parking and Smart Transports:

Traffic jam is one of the biggest problems in Karachi city. As our population grows, find parking in a rush area is very difficult. IOT brings the solution to this growing problem. Using EasyPark as an example, for the citizens the app makes the whole parking experience easier, from finding a spot to paying for it. Smart transportation systems and smart bus systems are complemented by smart bus stops that provide free Wi-Fi, USB charging stations, and bus schedule updates for riders.

Conclusion:

These are some of the few solutions which gave the approach of a smart city. There is a solution to every problem. All we need is to use the IOT instead of the old method. Everything needs to be digitalized. This not only improves the lives of residents of Karachi city but also improves the city system.

A smart city is a city where the majority of the management system is working on IoT such as sensors, mobile applications, the latest tools, and technology, etc. Our city can be transformed into a smart city.
