What are the objectives of the storm sewer system design?

Storm water is a term used for the runoff water caused by rainfall or any kind of precipitation. It is essential to design storm sewer system for a good water management. Water flow in roadways causes the traffic or accidents on the routes or highways because it is difficult to run a vehicle on water logged area. So the problem can be nullify by limiting the water flow from the travelways and that's the objective of storm sewer design.

For the storm sewer design we take three points into consideration which are:

1- Diameter of storm sewer

2- Slope of the sewer line with the horizontal bed.

3- Depth of strom water section between two manholes.

The main criteria for design is to achieve : minimum storm water velocity, suitable diamter to carry design flow rate and minimum depth of flow. Diameter can be get by taking minimum velocity and using equation of continuity, slope of sewer calculated by mannings formula etc.
