Attention- Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD)- It is a brain disorder that is classified as
neurodevelopmental disorder. It is also known as behavioral
disorder in children. ADHD is very common disorder in children.
Core features- There are three main symptoms to diagnose the
ADHD, poor attention span with distractibility (inattention),
hyperactivity and impulsivity.
Other features- There are more other features such as,
confusion, forgetfulness, inconsistency in behaviour,
non-compliance, feeling easily bored, and not responding as early
as others to rewards and punishments, social difficulties,
difficulty in emotion regulation, reading and writing difficulties.
They also feel very anxious and depressive traits may be also
present.
- Poor attention spans with distractibility-
- They fail to finish the things started, their attention shifts
from one incomplete activity to another, it seems that they don't
listen. they are easily distracted by external stimuli. They often
lose their things.
- They don't follow the instructions and not able to finish their
homework. They have problems in organizing tasks and activities.
They are able to manage their time management and finish works with
the deadlines.
- They avoid those works which required sustained mental
efforts.
- They also forget their daily activities such as, chores,
errands, returning calls, and keeping appointments.
- Hyperactivity-
- They look very fidgety. They found very difficult to sit at one
place for long time. They talks excessively. They interfere in
other people's activities.
- They run or climb on desk in the classrooms.
- They are unable to engage with their hobbies.
- Impulsivity-
- They acts before thinking and don't wait for their turn while
playing with others childern.
- They answer before completing the questions.
- They talk non-stop.
- For the diagnosis, there are certain criteria such as-
- The inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity should be
chronic.
- Due to these symptoms, personal, social and occupational lives
should be impaired.
- Usually the diagnosis is done after the age of 3years.
- There should be undue lack of persistence at task.
- There should be unduly high distractibility toward the external
stimuli.
- There should be frequent changes in decision making when other
options are available.
- There should be short durability in their playing
activities.
- There should be unduly sitting when sitting is required.
