Evaluate the fugacity for a gas of Ar at 100 bar and 298 K

Solutions

Expert Solution

Fugacity is a thermodynamic property of a real gas which, if substituted for the pressure or partial pressure in the equations for an ideal gas, gives equations applicable to the real gas.

That means, fugacity is the ‘real’ pressure of a gas, which is somewhat lesser or greater than the pressure it would have if it were an ideal gas.

Fugacity (f) can be expressed as f=φ*P, where φ is the ‘fugacity coefficeint’, and P= pressure.

Evaluation of φ for Argon at 298K and 100 bar:

By the formula,

where B’= second Virial coefficient form the Virial equation of state Z= 1+ B’/Vm+ C/Vm2+…..

P=pressure, T=absolute temperature and R= universal gas constant

From thermodynamic data chart, for Argon, approximately, B’= 0.012 L/mol

So,

                 = 0.0484345

Hence φ = 1.0496 for Argon at 298K and 100 bar

Hence fugacity of Argon at 298K and 100bar = 100*1.0496 = 104.96 bar (Ans).
