While the task of brainstorming is necessary, is there ever a time limit? Where should the lines be drawn during the brainstorming session, if ever?
Yes, brainstorming session has a time span of up to 45 minutes. The time limit is to ensure that sufficient ideas are generated in a short time and the session is productive. Having a lengthy brainstorming session can be detrimental to the overall purpose. It also doesn't motivate idea generation due to the cushion to relax. However, a 30-minute session is ideal for a brainstorming session in getting the best outcome. Also, the number of participants play a role in influencing a positive outcome for the brainstorming session. This is why it is necessary to limit the number of participants as well.
For a brainstorming session to be successful, there are certain ground rules that need to be established at the beginning, The objective of the brainstorming should be to get quality ideas and get people involved in the session. The first rule is to give a little time to everyone to think without hastily getting everyone involved. Since you are looking for quality, ensure that every individual gets to share at least one idea. Allow every idea to be expressed without labeling them as it shouldn't hinder someone from giving their thoughts. The number of ideas should not be the focus of the brainstorming session as it would give rise to bad ones.
