List the pros and cons of a hierarchical and matrix team organizations

Solutions

Expert Solution

Matrix team :

A well-known feature of this hierarchical model is that everyone in the organization reports to a single boss. The matrix structure is different in striking ways:

Employees are generally accountable to more than one boss

There are usually two separate chains of command

The matrix structure is designed to be partially impermanent

There are two kinds of managers: functional managers and project managers

Managerial roles are fluid, not fixed

The balance of power between functional and project managers isn't organizationally defined.

Advantages:

Because matrix structures retain an organization's functional structure, they allow for the rapid creation of efficient large-scale, project structures that employ many members of the organization's functional structure but without disrupting or destroying the structure in the process.

Disadvantages:

Two-boss problems, leaving project members caught in the middle

Project members playing bosses against one another

Increases organizational complexity

Requirement for high degree of cooperation between functional and project management.

hierarchical team :

Many businesses are organized in a hierarchical structure that resembles a military command structure. There's the big boss at the top giving orders, a next tier of managers implementing them, and perhaps other management tiers if the business is large enough.

Advantages:

The structure has its advantages. After all, you want to have ways for employees to be accountable either to you, to another manager or to a team leader for their work responsibilities.

The higher a person is in this structure, the more authority she has, but also more responsibilities. This is an advantage because employees have an unambiguous understanding of who's in charge and who they need to report to. It also gives staff a clear path to move up the career ladder in the organization if they want to earn more money and assume more responsibility.

Disadvantages:

A major disadvantage to the hierarchical management structure is that it doesn't encourage people to collaborate and share information across the vertical lines of the reporting structure. People working in hierarchical organizations are more likely to develop into cliques, which in turn compete for power. You don't just see this kind of competition at the departmental level. Managers might become territorial about their own department, and they might more often approach organizational-level issues from their own departmental perspective.
