Taichung thermal power station wants to change their steam generator with a new steam generator that has a better efficiency. The existing steam generator operating with Rankine cycle with reheat and has a thermal efficiency of 30%. Taichung thermal power station has been offered by Patron Company that supplies new steam generators that are more environmentally friendly. The specifications of the new steam generator are as follow:

  • maximum pressure is 15MPa,
  • minimum pressure is 10kPa
  • Temperature entering the turbine is 500°C.
  • Isentropic efficiency of the pump is 85%

Taichung thermal power station wants the new steam generator to have vapor content of the steam to exceed 90% and the steam mass flow rate is 12kg/s. Evaluate:

i.                             the pressure at which the reheat cycles takes place

(12 marks, C5)

ii.                     the total rate of heat in the boiler

(4 marks, C5)

iii.                           Does the new steam generator have higher thermal efficiency of the cycle
than the current generator? Justify your answer.

A steam generator is needed in the design of new mini-power plant. This generator can be purchased with two different specification proposals, A or B. Proposal A has life of 15 years, a first cost of RM45,000 to buy with estimated an annual saving of RM3,500 per year and estimated for an annual operating & maintenance cost of RM750 per year. A salvage value of RM10,700 and one-off overhaul in year 9 that cost RM 1,500. Proposal B has a...

Superheated steam at 8 MPa and 480°C leaves the steam generator of a vapor power plant. Heat transfer and frictional effects in the line connecting the steam generator and the turbine reduce the pressure and temperature at the turbine inlet to 7.7 MPa and 440°C, respectively. The pressure at the exit of the turbine is 10 kPa, and the turbine operates adiabatically. Liquid leaves the condenser at 8 kPa, 36°C. The pressure is increased to 8.6 MPa across the pump....

a.) What is the thermal efficiency of a steam power plant operating on the Rankine cycle if saturated steam is supplied to the turbine at 1000 psia, and the condenser is at 1 psia. Use a turbine efficiency of 95% and a pump efficiency of 85%. Refer to Chapter 9, Sections 10-11, as necessary. b.) Determine the thermal efficiency if the steam is superheated to 1000 F, assuming all else equal.
