1) A sample of gas in a balloon has an initial temperature of 45C and a volume of 1.28×103 L . If the temperature changes to 62C , and there is no change of pressure or amount of gas, what is the new volume, V2 of the gas?

V2=?

2) What Celsius temperature T2, is required to change the volume of the gas sample in Part A (T1=45C, V1=1.28×103 L) to a volume of 2.56×103 LL ? Assume no change in pressure or the amount of gas in the balloon.

T2=?

Solutions

Expert Solution

.Charles' given the relationship between Volume and temperature of gas at constant pressure.

According to Charles' law, V 1 / T 1 = V 2 / T 2

We have, V 1 = 1.28 10 3 L , T 1 = 45 + 273 =318 K , T 2 = 62 + 273 =335 K , V 2 = ?

1.28 10 3 L / 318 K = V 2 / 335 K

V 2 = 335 K ( 1.28 10 3 L / 318 K )

V 2 = 1348.4 L

ANSWER : New volume of gas : 1.35 10 3 L

According to Charles' law, V 1 / T 1 = V 2 / T 2

We have, V 1 = 1.28 10 3 L , T 1 = 45 + 273 =318 K , T 2 = ? K , V 2 = 2.56 10 3 L

1.28 10 3 L / 318 K = 2.56 10 3 L / T 2

T 2   = 2.56 10 3 L ( 318 K / 1.28 10 3 L )

T 2   = 636 K

T 2   = 636 - 273 = 363 0 C

ANSWER : T 2   = 363 0 C
