A researcher is running an experiment on the effectiveness of three different energy drinks. She randomly selects 150 individuals from the population and evenly splits them into three groups, each which consumes a different energy drink.

1. The research/alternative hypothesis for this test is that at least one of the three groups will be different. True or False?

The statistical results of the test are as follows: F(2, 147) = 2.24, p > .05.

2. In the above results, degrees of freedom within has what value?

c. The decision about the Null Hypothesis was to accept or reject?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) The null hypothesis is there will be no difference in the three groups
Alternative hypothesis will be that there is atleast one group which is different from others
Hence the given statement is TRUE

2) The between degrees of freedom = 3 - 1 = 2 (since there are 3 groups created)
total degrees of freedom will be 150 -1 = 149
  Thus Within groups degrees of freedom = 149 - 2 = 147
Within groups degrees of freedom = 147

c) The statistical results of the test are as follows: F(2, 147) = 2.24, p > .05
From the given F value we find p using Excel function F.DIST.RT
  p = F.DIST.RT(2.24, 2, 1470 = 0.1101
  0.1101 > 0.05
  p > 0.05
Hence we do not reject the null hypothesis
  Decision :
  Accept Null Hypothesis
