What does “significance” in hypthesis testing signify? Consider the statement, “x and y are different but not signicantly different”
Statistical significance is a concept used to provide justification for accepting or rejecting a given hypothesis.significance is statement of probability.
when we say that significance difference beween x and y ,we are saying that probability that x and y are same is low or very low.most of the time we check significance level at 5% or 1% that means low means less than 5% or less than 1%
this two levels are called significance level and it is denoted by alpha.level of significance chose to evaluate the null hypothesis.if we chose 5% level of significance then we can say that probability of x and y are same is less than 5%.therefore we conclude that they are not same.
when we say that x and y are significantly different ,we are pretty sure they are but we are not certain.we could be wrong.similarly when we say that x and y are not significantly different ,then we are pretty sure they are not different but we are not certain .
