What types of social and relationship issues are faced by people at mid-life?
Middle adulthood ranges from 45-65 years. During these years, marital satisfaction is seen in the form of a 'U' curve. Marital satisfaction is more in the initial years of marriage and decreases by middle adulthood as reported by people. The decrease is perhaps mainly because of the financial responsibilities and the responsibility of the children. However marital satisfaction tends to increase later in life once all these responsibilities are fulfilled.
People in middle adulthood may also get divorced. One major reason for this is the lack of intimacy and passion that people begin to experience during these years.
In middle adulthood, people usually have less friends than before. This is simply because of the additional responsibilities and lack of time. Although the quantity of friends may be less, the quality of friendships increases.
The changing patters of relationship can sometimes also lead to mid-life crisis. It may get difficult for parents to realize that their children are getting older and that eventually they'll leave home to lead their own lives. The phenomenon of empty nest usually takes place at this time. When the last child leaves home, the parents may find it difficult to refocus on their own individuality.
