Various health and safety hazards present in the workplaces and factories of Ghana are safety hazards, biological hazards, physical hazards, ergonomic hazards, chemical hazards and psychological hazards. Safety hazards are the most common types of issues prevailing in the factories. These unsafe working conditions can cause injury, death or illness of the workers. These include spills on floors, tripping hazards, blocked aisles or cords on the floor, working from heights, unguarded machinery, moving machinery parts, improper wiring, confined spaces and others. Biological hazards occur because of exposure to blood or other bodily fluids, fungi or mold, virus and bacteria, plants, insect bites, animal and bird droppings. Furthermore, physical hazards include high exposure to UV rays, extreme temperatures, loud noise, poor lighting, lack of ventilation, faulty electric wiring and bare electric cables. Ergonomic hazards occur due to improper adjustments of workstations, frequent lifting, posture, awkward movements, repetitive body movements and vibrations. Chemical hazards occur from exposure to solvents, harmful gases like propane, carbon monoxide or helium, flammable materials like gasoline, explosive chemicals and pesticides.
