Why do you think our divorce rate is so high? What could be done to change this?
Infidelity is reported as one of the common reasons for divorce. I believe infidelity in a marital relationship is unacceptable for both men and women. There is no justification for it. Lack of good communication between the partners can lead to misunderstandings in any relationship. Verbal communication and nonverbal communication are both equally important. It is important to communicate your feelings clearly and talk to each other to sort out any confusion. Couples often assume they do not have to tell their partners everything as they think their partners know them well enough. This may lead to wrong assumptions and misinterpreted feelings. Always talk it out. Marriage age of couples can also play a significant role in the strength of the relationship. Couples who marry at a very young age may not be mature enough to carry forward a successful marriage. Although marriage at a reasonable age is suggested, I believe the decision of marriage should be made by a couple when they are both ready for the commitment and responsibilities that come with it. Age does not necessarily have to determine when you are ready for marriage; you could be 24 years or 33 years. Go for it when you are ready and sure of it. There may also be less satisfaction in marriage due to differences in beliefs and opinions, and this often leads to arguments over these differences. Before you make the decision of marriage, discuss your likes/dislikes, your habits, and your choices--especially those about children and jobs. The notion of “divorce if you are unhappy” has made it easy for people to make the choice of divorce. Since there is less social stigma attached to divorce these days, couples think it is “normal” for marriages to end up in divorce. There is no moral responsibility to make a marriage work, only moral permission for divorce. When people start choosing life partners by way of love rather than by job, status, or income, relationships will be strengthened to a large extent and divorce rates will fall significantly.
