Prepare a comprehensive homework on polymer concretes and polymer impregnated concretes, their properties, standards and usage areas.

Expert Solution

Ans-firstly we discussed about polymer concrete. It is a composite material in which the binder consists entirely of a synthetic organic polymer. It is also known assynthetic resin concrete, plastic resin concrete or simply resin concrete. Because the use of a
polymer instead of Portland cement represents a substantial increase in cost, polymers should be used only in applications in which the higher cost can be justified by superior properties, low labor cost or low energy requirements during processing and handling.it is therefore important that architects and engineers have some knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of PC materials in order to select the most appropriate and economic product for a specific application.

Its used area, Polymer concrete are applicable and are being used for many purposes in construction. Polymer concrete is less permeable in comparison to pure concrete and help in corrosion protection. It is also used as repair material in old and new buildings. This material is very much useful where quick repair is required for heavy duty substrates such as bridges of heavy vehicle load. Polymer concrete is also used for making artificial stone tiles.

Now we discuss about polymer Imprengeted concrete. Actually it is a type of polymer concrete. In the polymer Imprengeted concrete the prepolymers or the low viscosity liquid monomers are partially or completely impregnated with the pore system of the hardened cement composite structure. After this procedure, the whole treated structure is allowed to polymerize.

Properties:(a)The polymer impregnated concrete is highly resistant to acid attack, sulfate attack and chloride attack when compared with PCC.

b) The polymer impregnated concrete gains cube compressive strength more than 100N/mm2. This strength is irrespective of the strength of the conventional concrete.

c) The elastic modulus lies in the range from 30 to 60N/mm2. This value is similar to the value that is obtained from high strength concrete.

Usage area: In many different area it is used. Like as  Sewage Disposal Works, Marine and Under Water Applications, use as Structural Members, Application in Irrigation Structures, Nuclear Power Plants. These above area where I can use Imprengeted concrete polymer.
