What pressure allows fine beach sand to have good bearing capacity at low tide on the flat area near the water?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The fine sands will have smaller diameter of pores which leads to capillary action results in capillary rise.

In the zone of capillary rise negetive pore water pressure develops which leads to increase of effective stress and further leads to increase of shear strength.

So finally Negetive pore water pressure allows fine sands in the beach to have good strength at low tide on the flat area near the water.

A study of the effects of exercise used rats bred to have high or low capacity for exercise. The 8 high-capacity rats had mean blood pressure 89 mm Hg and standard deviation 9 mm Hg; the 8 low-capacity rats had mean blood pressure 105 mm Hg with standard deviation 13 mm Hg. For a three-dimensional (3D) solid, we have found the low-temperature heat capacity to be proportional to T3. How does it depend on the temperature for the two-dimensional (2D) graphene? Hint: In order to give a correct answer to this question, you have to know a curious fact about the phonon dispersion in graphene. We have seen that the acoustic phonon branches in both one dimension and 3D have a dispersion with ?(k) ∝ k. For graphene, this is not so:...
