A study of the effects of exercise used rats bred to have high or low capacity for exercise. The 8 high-capacity rats had mean blood pressure 89 mm Hg and standard deviation 9 mm Hg; the 8 low-capacity rats had mean blood pressure 105 mm Hg with standard deviation 13 mm Hg. What is the value of the two-sample t statistic for comparing the two population means?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Since nothing is mentioned about the differencing,i.e,whether it should be between high or low or between low or high, the problem is solved by taking the difference between the high capacity rats and the low capacity rats. If the other case is required,i.e,the difference between low capacity and the high capacity rats, then the value of the test statistic would be positive and the rest procedure remains same.

Stress and weight in rats. In a study of the effects of stress on weight in rats, 71 rats were randomly assigned to either a stressful environment or a control (nonstressful) environment. After 21 days, the change in weight (in grams) was determined for each rat. The table below summarizes the data on weight gain. Test the claim that stress effects weight. Low and high levels of insulin doses are given to two groups of diabetic rats to check the insulin binding capacity, yielding the following data. Assuming both variances are equal, give a 95% confidence interval for the difference of the true average insulin-binding capacity between two samples. Low Insulin level: sample size = 8; mean=1.98; std., deviation = .51 High insulin level:sample size = 13; mean=1.30; std., deviation = .35

A study is done to determine the effects of different forms of regular exercise on HDL levels in persons between the ages of 18 and 29. The forms of exercise observed were aerobic, weight training, and yoga. The participants HDL levels are measured after 8 weeks. Using multiple linear regression, the following regression line was created: HDL = 54.6-2.22(aerobic exercise)-1.75(weight training) Aerobic exercise is measured in hours. Weight training is a dichotomous (binary) outcome. 1=yes; 0=no Estimate the HDL level...
