You need to increase the dissolution rate of a slightly water soluble drug in tablet form. Propose three different solutions to this problem and explain why each of your solutions will solve the problem. (note that making a prodrug is not an option).

Expert Solution

There was many of method available to increase the solubility of the drug molecule such as prodrug formation, particle size reduction, solid dispersion, salt formation. here I am explaining the 3 methods as follows.

Particle size reduction: When the drug particle mesh size reduced to very small, the solubility of the drug will increased in water because of increase of the surface of the drug. The drug particle size can reduced by Jet Mill, Micronizer, ball mills.

Solid dispersion: Widely in pharmaceutical industry/College/University the poor water soluble drug converted into good water soluble drug by solid dispersion method. Generally the hydrophilic matrix is mixed with hydrophobic drug. many of NCE's ahs increased there bio-availability by solid dispersion method.

Salt formation: When the parent compound solubility very poor in water, such a drug converted into salt of parent drug. Some example of salts Sodium salt, Mesylate salt, Potassium salt, arginine salt, Hydrochloride salt, sulphate salt.
