How do you know a compound is water soluble?

How do you know a compound is water soluble?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The solubilty means the amount of substance that dissolves in unit volume of solvent e.g. water. Solubilty depends up on the different factors:

1) Polatiry: If the compound is polar ,then it becomes water soluble.i.e. like dissolves like.. The compds. containing polarizable bonds are soluble in water. Ethanol & acetone being contain   polar groups are soluble in water.

2)Hydrogen bonding:The compounds which form the hydrogen bonding with water are soluble in water. e.g. sugars like glucose, fructose, sucrose are soluble in water because of hydrogen bonding.

3)Crystallinity: When Compound s are crystalline then most probably it solble in water , however the amorphous compds. are not soluble.. When the crystalline compd is taken in water the crystal lattice begins to collapse .

4)Temperature: Solubility also depends up on the temperature. On warmimg the clear soution in water is obtained.
