Based on their position in the peeriodic table, which atom would you predict to form a compound with one chlorine atom and 2 bromine atoms respectively? a. potassium, magnesium b. carbon, lithium c. boron, sodium d. calcium, carbon e. aluminum, aluminum
Answer: e. aluminum, aluminum
Total anionic form atoms are 3. Only possible compounds (KCl or KBr). (MgCl2 or MgBr2), (CCl4, LiCl or LiBr), CaCl2 or CaBr2) ---- odd man out for a. b. combinations
c. boron, sodium in this combination boron can form BClBr2 but Sodium will not form as it forms NaCl or NaBr only. Hence c. is out also, only option d. is to be checked
Aluminium atomic number is 13 and its electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p1. The valence shell is 3s2 3p1 when it loses three electrons it achieves most stable noble gas configuration i.e Al3+. chlorine and bromine atoms always gain an electron to achieve most stable noble gas configuration i.e Cl- & Br- only.
Hence aluminium form a compound with one chlorine atom and 2 bromine atoms respectively are AlClBr2 (Also AlCl3 & AlBr3 are also possible)
