What were your automatic assumptions and/or behaviors during the situation? Were your beliefs challenged in any way? — If you were in a nondominant or minority group, did you experience any discomfort in this role? Explain your response.
Happened many times with me. Following are some of the occasions I can recall:
Atmosphere at my home did not consist of many literates, only men had their schooling completed, and hence I could not get English language from home as many other kids in my city would. In spite of this we used to live in one of the most posh areas of the city because my grandfather was a small government servant and because of his seniority in his service he was given that flat in which we all lived. Also my elementary schooling was in regional language. Parents use to take me to some nice places like children's park, gaming zone on weekends. Once in children's park I was on a swing and near the swing a lady with her kid was waiting for the swing to get vacant, She spoke something to me in English language and what she said just went above my head, however I felt embarrassed as I couldn't comprehend what she said and I vacated the swing without uttering a word.
A similar incident happened when in a market I was checking some fancy books for kids written in English when a man mockingly said something like- will you be able to read this English book, I left the book and went back to ,my family. I never narrated such embarrassing incidents to my family. I only hoped to get in to a English medium school which I eventually did from 9th standard onwards :).
Right now I am living in south part of my country with totally a different language and culture, I am very new here (1 month old in this city) and everyone around me, including my in-laws and my husband speak in local language with each other. Although with me they speak in my language which they fortunately know, however when relatives gather at home and every one speaks that language I feel dumb and alone. I feel a little discomfort, but I am trying to pick the local language to improve my situation.
