Identify the sampling method for each scenario.
(a) An orchard farmer subdivides his orchard into 40 parcels of land. He randomly selects 4 parcels and inspects every tree on those parcels for the presence of a particular fungus.
Cluster Sampling
Explanation: In Cluster Sampling, the researcher divides the population into separate groups called clusters. then a Simple Random Sample of clusters is selected. The researcher analyses data from the sampled clusters. Here the clusters are parcels.
(b) A librarian inspects every fifth book on a shelf starting with the second to determine the number of items missing bar codes.
Systematic Sampling
Explanation: In Systematic Sampling, the sample members are selected according to a random starting point with a fixed periodic interval.
(c) A hotel leaves customer satisfaction cards in each guest room. At the end of the week, the general manager reads all 60 cards that were filled out by guests that week.
Census Sampling
Explanation: Census sampling is complete enumeration.
(d) The College of Engineering randomly selects samples from each of its four branches (mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical) to assess the effectiveness of a new program for student advising.
Stratified Sampling
Explanation: The researcher divides the population into separate groups called strata and Simple Random Sample is taken from each stratum.
