1 Why is it cooler to wear a white shirt than a black shirt on a hot, sunny day?
2 On a hot day in your hot kitchen, you decide to work with the refrigerator door open in an attempt to have the refrigerator cool the room. Which of the following best describes the result of this decision? Explain your answer.
a It will cool the room very effectively
b It will cool the room, but inefficiently
c It will not change anything
d It will actually warm the room
3 Consider standing on a bathroom scale. How will the reading of the scale compare if you stand on one leg instead of two?
a It will show less
b It will show more
c It will show the same
4 Consider standing on a bathroom scale. What does a bathroom scale show?
a Mass
b Density
c Force
d Pressure
1. Actually a combination of the two would be best.
White reflects heat and light energy, which reflects it away from
your body. Darker colors like black absorb light and heat and hold
it close to you.
But because black holds onto heat, it takes a while for the heat to
get through the shirt. The outside absorbs and it slowly filters
down the shirt layers to your skin, where it warms.
If you wear a white shirt over a black shirt, the white shirt will
reflect most of the light and heat away. But any light and heat
that does get through is absorbed by the black shirt's outer layer
and held away from your skin.
The combination of white outer shirt and black inner shirt is best
for hot and sunny days.
2. It will actually warm the room. Option (d)
3. The scale should register the same weight. The only quantity which has changed is the pressure you exert on the top of the scale. However, assuming that the pan of the scale is rigid, your weight acts at the support of the pan, and the same force is registered.Option (c)
4. Option (c) Force
