What volume (in mL) of a 0.125 M HNO3 solution is required to completely react with 39.8 mL of a 0.102 M Na2CO3 solution according to the following balanced chemical equation?

Na2CO3(aq)+2HNO3(aq)→2NaNO3(aq)+CO2(g)+H2O(l)

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Let us say that the volume of HNO3 solution is required = Z mL

Hence, the moles of HNO3 solution is required = Z mL x 0.125 M = 0.125Z mmol

Moles of Na2CO3 = 39.8 mL x 0.102 M = 4.06 mmol

Theoretically, 1 mol of Na2CO3 reacts with 2 mol of HNO3

Therefore, theoretically, 4.06 mmol Na2CO3 reacts with = (2 mol/1 mol) x 4.06 mmol

                                                                                         = 8.12 mmol of HNO3

Now,

0.125Z mmol = 8.12 mmol

or, Z = 65.0

Hence, the volume of HNO3 solution is required = 65.0 mL
