How did the framers of our constitution harmonize majority rule with individual rights? and how do we still struggle with this same tension today?
As we know, America is the land of diversity, people came here for opportunities and resources, and they brought traditions, language, food, and rituals. The main challenge for our framers was to construct a flexible, democratic and supportive constitution that could be able to maintain fundamental characteristics of the country. The majority population of the country was white so the racial influence was the major challenge to our framers. They were building a constitution for the great country so they advocated civil rights to maintain social harmony, the federal structure was the better idea to maintain diversity as well as borders of the country.
As I said, America was not a country, it was land of colonies and natives, our framers worked hard to support its nature but it was not possible to do in a day or year, these residues are still creating tensions today. We are still facing racial discrimination, social conflicts, and ideological conservatism. Modern America became the superpower but social structure takes time to change, it is changing gradually and we are experiencing transitional tensions.
In my opinion, as soon as constitutional values become strong, these tensions will eliminate gradually, not in a day but surely.
