Expert Solution

CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM: The vector sum of the external forces on a system is zero. the total momentum of the system is constant so the total momentum is conserved.

Examples: Two ice skaters push each other as they skate on a frictionless horizontal surface. The forces the skaters exert on each other form an action-reaction pair. Although the normal and gravitational
forces are external. their vector sum is zero. so the total momentum is conserved.

ii) Two billiard ball on a table the two balls and the table are represented as an isolated system.

IMPULSE: The change in momentum of a particle during a time interval equals the impulse
of the net force that acts on the particle during that interval.

J = P2 - p1

impulse J = F X t

Examples: cricket ball catching, billiard game these two games large force applying in short interval of time

ii) driving nail in to wall

center of mass: The total mass of the body is suppose to be concentrated at perticular point in the body is called center of mass. it is an imaginary point

All symmetric bodies the center of mass is geometric center.

for asymmetric bodies to find center of mass

Xcm = m1x1+m2x2+.......+mnxn / m1+m2+.....+ mn

Ycm = m1y1+m2y2+.......+mnyn / m1+m2+.....+ mn

Examples: We can easily balance the object using center of mass point.
