Methods of performance appraisal : ?There are many performance appraisal methods followed by organisations to ensure fair appraisals to their employees.
1. Management by objective: This technique involves setting up of objectives and goals for the employee either by the employer, or his manager, or both employee and employer. By this method the employee is able to perform better because he knows the amount of work he need s to deliver. The advantages of this method are : less time consuming, cost-effective and fair.
2. Essay Method : This method involves writing a detailed descriptive essay of the performance of the employee by the employee’s direct supervisor or manager. This method is performed especially in startups. The essay focuses on empoyee's strenghth, weaknesses and his or her attitude on the job. The advantage of this method include easy to perform and an effective way to appraise. The biasness can be a limitation.
3. 360 degree feedback : In this method data for performance appraisal is collected from everyone who interacts with the employee during the office hours that is peers, subordinates, supervisors, and sometimes, from internal and external customers. The Advantage is it is cost effective and precise. There is less chance of baisness. However, it is a time-consuming process.
4. 720 degree feedback : As the name suggest it
is twice of 360 degree. In this method, there are two Rounds of
feedback that is pre and post feedback. It is more powerful tool
because it is conducted at regular intervals and helps to keep a
track of the changes in the employee. Advantage : Improved feedback
from more sources and performance development. Disadvantage : it
requires commitment from top management and the human
resources.
