The New York City Department of Education  is the department of the government of New York City that manages the city's public school system. The City School District of the City of New York (the New York City public schools) is the largest school system in the United States, with over 1.1 million students taught in more than 1,800 separate schools.The city has started several initiatives to reduce childhood obesity among students, including promoting exercise and improving nutrition in school cafeterias.The Department has closed many failing elementary, middle (intermediate) and high schools. The buildings of some of the larger schools have been turned into Campuses in which a number of smaller school entities, educationally independent of each other, co-exist within the building. New York City is the largest school district in the United States.
